Bulak Mencilis CAVE
Mencilis Cave is the 5th longest cave in Turkey, located within the borders of Bulak village, Karabük province.
The cave is a horizontally extending, multi-storey formation consisting of active and fossil sections. There are measurements claiming that its length is 6052 m. It consists of three interconnected floors, from the bottom floor of which comes the spring used as Safranbolu's drinking water.
The cave has three entrances. The first entrance from which the underground river emerges is closed with a siphon after 30 m. This area is called Water Cave. The main entrance is the second entrance on the valley slope, 300 m to the north. It is 75 m above the valley floor. It can be reached via a staircase of 148 steps. The third entrance is located on the slope above the main entrance.
The 1st and 2nd floors of the cave have completed their formation and become fossilized. The fact that stalactites and stalagmites begin to darken shows this. Since the underground stream flows through the bottom floor, it is active and its formation and development continues. The stream flowing through it creates many closed siphons and lakes in the cave.
The middle floor of the cave has been opened to tourism. In this area, there are many examples of stalactite formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, curtains and walls. The mud area suitable for mud baths, called Ajda's bed, is in this section. The underground stream creates a 15 m waterfall inside the cave.
The temperature in the cave is 12 °C and the relative humidity is around 70-75%. Remains of walls made with Khorasan mortar are found in the entrance section. It suggests that it was used as a shelter in the past.
